The first parameter is a number that will be operated on. The second parameter is the number of digits that the first number should occupy. If the first parameter has fewer digits than the second parameter, the result will be the first parameter padded with leading zeros to fill all the digits. If the first parameter has more digits than the second parameter, the result will be the first parameter. I've found this useful in applications where I needed to serialize a set of documents and could simply append a number, and still keep them in order. When called, it puts a flashing sicn in the application menu, and marks the application with a diamond, if the calling application is in the background. If the calling application is in the foreground, nothing happens. This is useful for long scripts to let the user switch out of HyperCard and work on something else, but then let them know when HyperCard is ready to interact again. The id is just a unique number that HyperCard assigns to every object. The flag should be true if used in a card field, false if used in a background field. The quoted string can contain any of the characters biuosce which stand for bold, italic, underline, outline, shadow, condense, and extend, respectively. The first parameter is always the command, get or set, which indicates what should be done. If the command set is used, then 3 parameters must be used. The first parameter is the command, the second parameter is the delay until repeat, and the third parameter is the key repeat rate. It returns an error message if there are any problems, or empty if successful. AutoKeyRate is implemented as an XFCN, although it could have been done as an XCMD, I did it this way because it is easy to use to get the current keyThresh and keyRepThresh, or set them and check for errors.

It allows you to display pictures associated with a custom clut. Unfortunately, there is a problem. When you close the picture, the system continues to use the custom clut instead of the standard system colors - which results in odd-colored buttons, titlebars, etc.! People have devised all sorts of ways to solve this problem, but the RestoreSystemClut XCMD offers a simple solution. Just like the name says, it will restore the system clut.

This stack will quickly locate all the stacks on the volume of your choice; peek at the stack scripts (without opening the stacks); and replace the infected scripts sans the virus code. CommConnect should be great for users with AV Macs, since the Connection tools should support the GeoPort. In addition, PowerBook Duo owners should have no problems (which ordinarily are caused by only having one serial port). Because of the way that HyperCard works, CommConnect doesn't support File Transfer tools or Terminal tools.

The easiest way to use this stack is to go to the Easy card. Once you get there, click the Easy Install button. You will be prompted to select a copy of a stack in which to install ColorCover, its supporting resources and the necessary scripts. Whenever you are working with resources, you should work with copies of your stacks. If the power goes out while the work is being done, your stack could be ruined! After the resources have been installed, you will be transferred to the target stack. A palette displaying the standard 256 system colors will appear.

DialogDisplay can now receive feedback from 1 to 3 buttons, and can display up to 4 strings of text. You first must set up your dialog (DLOG) resource in ResEdit. Each item in a dialog has an item number. Item numbers 1-3 are reserved in DialogDisplay for buttons only. 2.01 fixes a small obscure bug which would occur on and off on some systems. It involved using dialogs without buttons.

The stack's cantModify property is set to true to keep it from growing. This is a great tool for people developing their own stacks, using multiple backgrounds.

If it is used with older System Software it will report that Informant is not available. Click on and/or examine the script of the button in the stack to see how it works! Bear in mind that this is only a Demo, the real version has all the features described in the stack. The Informant XFCN takes 1 parameter, a four character selector code indicating what to report on. If the selector code is in the list a verbose result is returned, however if the selector code is not in the list below an eight digit hexadecimal number is returned. It is up to the user to interpret this hexadecimal number.

The digests are each read into one card. If the file is larger than 28k then the file is split into 28k segments, each segment of the file is placed in a separate field.

E.g. a certain widely used statistical package for mainframes likes its data to be in column format, while a widely used spreadsheet for the Macintosh wants its data in Tab or comma delimited format. (OK, a spreadsheet is NOT statistical software, but it just goes as an example.) Although most statistical software offers services for the exchange of data between packages, usually the one you need just isn't there.

On page 773 of the book, a HyperTalk script is presented that converts Apple Macintosh ascii text to Sharp Wizard ascii text. The script is 100% hyperTalk. Danny Goodman converts it to an XFCN using CompileIt! from Heizer Software. However, the resulting XFCN was still too slow, so he used the HyperBASIC language (from Teknosys) to make an XFCN that does the same thing and the BASIC XFCN was much much faster.

Why?? Well simple, what if you were doing QuickTime movies (like I was) and your target only had 8 bit video cards. QuickTime does not remap the Color LookUp Table (CLUT) it, instead, dithers it's colors and there is a noticable degradation in color quality on some video, which as a  rule is 16 bit color. Palette can extract the best 256 colors and build a color palette which is stored in the resource fork of the stack. It can then change the systems color palette so that when the picture is displayed it looks best it can on an 8 bit monitor.
